Psychotherapy and Counselling, Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy, in Harley Street, Central London, and Bexhill-on-Sea in Sussex.

Richard

I am a counsellor, psychotherapist and psychosexual and relationship therapist based in Harley Street, Central London and in Sussex.

Choosing a therapist is a very important decision- not as important as choosing a partner, but significant nevertheless. There are at least two reasons why choosing the right therapist for you matters so much. Going to a therapist for the first time can be unnerving. There can be all kinds of anxiety. What will I say? How will I say it? What will the therapist think of me? Will I cry? Will it do me any good? The second reason is related to that last question because the research evidence suggests the relationship you will form with the therapist will probably make a great difference to the outcome. In fact, research shows that your choice of therapist is the second most important factor influencing the outcome of the therapy. The most important factor is the motivation you bring to the therapy.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy may be undertaken for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:

  • Exploring yourself, perhaps for personal development.
  • To deal with a particular situation, such as a stressful period at work, a relationship break-up, a bereavement, or the end of a relationship.
  • Because you have a sense that your life is not working out, and you would like to understand the situation more and see what can be done about it.
  • To deal with some sort of emotional difficulty such as a tendency to worry, anxiety or depression.
  • In order to come to terms with your past- with for example, emotional, sexual, or physical abuse, a bereavement in childhood, or a difficult childhood in general.
  • To overcome a particular habit, such as alcohol or drug problems, a tendency towards obsessive-compulsive behaviours, or suffering from phobias.
  • To enable you to reduce your anger levels and learn to manage your responses effectively.

How Does Therapy Work?

One answer to this question is that it may work in different ways for different people, and so I try to find a kind of therapy that will suit you. Certainly, you are the most important single factor influencing the outcome of the therapy. Your motivation and commitment are key. After that, it appears that the relationship between the therapist and the client has a vital part to play. The therapist needs to be warm, empathic and non-judgemental. On top of this, I believe the openness of the therapist is crucial. In the atmosphere that these qualities can foster, defences can come down and your own access to your own wisdom will be experienced. As a generalisation, I find that clients have a very good idea of what is at the root of their difficulties and can often find solutions to them.

About Myself

Research shows that the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in the success of psychotherapy. Like most therapists, I became a therapist after appreciating the effects of therapy for myself. As I continue I realise what it feels like to be in the chair in which you might be sitting. I work with people of all ages, backgrounds and across the full spectrum of sexual orientations. All my clients are important to me.
